A letter to my Esthetician sisters

My heart is burdened as I get off the phone with a woman who shared her fight with acne her entire adult life. The one time she dare see an esthetician she spoke of the embarrassment as this women shone a bright light directly in her face and began telling her everything that is wrong with her skin.  I get a similar phone call from different women about every four months since starting my career six years ago.  Another woman spoke of a mortifying experience as an esthetician pointed out a wrinkle next to her mouth. "I didn't even know I had a wrinkle there until she pointed it out! Now I can't stop looking at it" she exclaimed.

I get it esthetic sisters, we have all this beautiful knowledge to help heal the skin.  I too, get excited about having answers so many people are in search of; but sometimes do we miss the point??

Place yourself in her shoes for a minute!  She has spent hundreds of dollars on many products that promise to improve her skin.  She has agonized about the pimple that wont go away, or expression line that grows every time she smiles or frowns.  She has bought products that make it worse, or clears it up for a little while and then doesn't.  She is embarrassed of her aging. She is ashamed she has spent so much money on junk.  She is burnt out on this endless fight to improve her skin.  Are you listening to her??  She is probably telling on herself as she lays on your table.  Can you read her exhausted discouragement as she verbally degrades herself?  She is courageously choosing to trust YOU!  Prayerfully hoping you will have some answers, that you will empathize with her concerns. Are you listening to her??

Sometimes we get so caught up on our own life, our own trials... Maybe the fight you had with your kid that morning may be replaying in your head. The worry about finances maybe haunting your soul.  Whatever it is though, we should never forget they are courageously trusting you to comfort and find solutions.

Please remind her how beautiful she is even if she is not pleased with her own physical appearance. Show her by listening intently that you understand her concerns and you are going to be an advocate for her. Think of her first, when you suggest treatments and products!

Treat her how you wish an esthetician would treat you!!
